Leak Detection

HOW TO CHECK FOR LEAKS

  • Checking your meter for a leak can save you time and money. First notice the small black box at the bottom right hand corner on the face of your meter. This is a “leak detector” make sure while you are watching the leak detector, that no water is being used inside or outside the home. If the box is blinking, you have a leak on your side of the meter. The leak detector will NOT blink if water is NOT going through your meter.
  • Look for unusual wet spots in your yard.
  • Take a meter reading in the evening before going to bed and another one in the morning before water is used. Subtract the two readings to tell how much water (if any) leaked. If you suspect a leak check your toilet first.
  • The toilet is a common source of leaks. Undetected there can be hundreds of gallons lost . To check your toilet for a leak, add a few drops of red food coloring to the tank, don’t flush, if the water in the bowl turns color your tank is leaking water.
  • If you are NOT a permanent resident, be sure that each time you leave your home for the week or weekend; TURN THE METER TO THE OFF POSITION (see red circled valve). This could save you problems and money should you have a water leak while gone.
